Field Trip!

Don't forget - we have a field trip to the Boise Zoo to check out the butterfly exhibit next week!

Welcome!

Welcome to Kindergarten! We are going to have so much fun this year!

I'm Mrs Kilgore. I graduated from Boise State University in 2014 with a degree in Early Childhood Studies and got my teaching certificate so that I could have so much fun teaching Kindergarteners! I have a wonderful husband and adorable daughter and have lived in Boise since 2004.

We are going to learn a lot about the alphabet, how to add and subtract numbers, make art projects learning about shapes, and how to use our senses. I can't wait to get to know my students and their parents!

ADA Letter

Here is a letter from the staff at Boise Elementary regarding assisting American's with Disabilities.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year! We are very excited to have everyone join us this year. We have put together a few thoughts on how to make this a fun and memorable year for everyone.

The ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act is a law that was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1990. It is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity". The determination of whether any particular condition is considered a disability is made on a case by case basis. The original intent of the law was to create civil rights law protections for people with disabilities permanently. It includes employment, entities at the public and state levels, and public accommodations.

Because we receive federal aid, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) says we are responsible for making our school learning friendly for kids of all abilities. It is our duty to provide all students with a free education and cater to all students needs.

The Assistive Technology Act, commonly called the Tech Act, was first established by Congress in 1998, and most recently authorized in 2010. This act was created to promote awareness of and access to assistive technology, devices and services available for those with disabilities. It focuses on establishing demonstration centers and and other supportive systems and groups available as well as protection and advocacy services and federal loans for those services.

Specifics:
*we will ask for input and updates from parents/guardians regarding each unique situation.
Adhd: We will create a calming environment so that distractions are limited. We will have neutral wall colors and only have wall coverings that are beneficial to the students’ learning.
Wheelchairs: We will make sure doors are wide enough along with the spaces between desks and we will have a wheelchair accessible desk in each classroom.
Autism: An aid will be trained on the students’ specific needs. The aid will help the student calm themselves and focus on the task at hand.
Cerebral Palsy: Each situation will be looked at individually. In general there will be dictation aids available and as well as reader aids for computer use.
Blind: Braille keyboards and books will be available for use by students. We will also have online assignments written as well as on a voicethread so that the student can hear the assignment.
Deaf: We will have every assignment written for the student, along with lectures and class discussions written in note format. We will have the student sit in the desk closest to where the teacher  will be speaking/sitting so they have a better chance of hearing the lectures/discussions.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: We will be accommodating to each unique situation.

Please do not hesitate to ask us any questions or if you have any suggestions. We want to make this a comfortable and safe environment for everyone. Here’s to a good year!

Sincerely,
The Staff at Boise Elementary
